Pre-Masters Program Entry Requirements

    • (Leading to 8543 Master of Information Technology)

      Successful completion of a recognised bachelor's degree equivalent to an Australian degree in a STEM discipline or cognate discipline with a minimum 50% average overall*, including a minimum 50% average in at least three mathematics courses.

    • (Leading to 8621 - Master of Engineering or 8338 - Master of Engineering Science)

      Successful completion of a recognised 4-year bachelor's degree equivalent to an Australian degree in Engineering in a cognate discipline with a minimum 50% average overall*, including a minimum 50% average in at least three mathematics courses.

      OR

      Successful completion of a recognised 3-year bachelor's degree equivalent to an Australian degree in Engineering Science in a cognate discipline from a university accredited under the Washington Accord with a minimum 50% average overall*, including a minimum 50% average in at least three mathematics courses.

  • All applicants must meet the UNSW College English requirements. Applicants will be deemed to have satisfied the English language requirements if they can provide evidence that they meet one or more of the following criteria:

    If you do not meet the English entry requirements, you may have to complete an Academic English program before you start the Pre-Masters. The length of the English program required will depend on the score received in your English tests.

    Prior Study

    UNSW college accepts completed or incomplete post-secondary or tertiary qualifications completed in English to meet our English language requirements depending on whether you are from an English-speaking background or non-English speaking background.

    English-speaking background:

    • Citizens of English-speaking countries, or
    • Permanent Residents of English-speaking countries, or
    • Minimum of ten years in an English-speaking country and completed secondary or tertiary education in an English-speaking country.

    You successfully completed at least one year of full-time study, in an assessable qualification, at a university or other post-secondary educational institution where the sole language of instruction and assessment was English.

    UNSW College recognises the follow countries as English-speaking: American Samoa, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Botswana, Canada, Fiji, Gibraltar, Ghana, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Africa, The Gambia, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, United Kingdom (including Northern Ireland), United States of America, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

    Students who do not meet the English language entry requirements will be given the opportunity to undertake a UNSW College University English Entry Course (UEEC) of 10 to 20 weeks, to meet the requirement. This opportunity will be made at the offer stage, to those students who do not meet the English Language entry requirements.

  • (a) If you have an IELTS equal to 6.0 (or equivalent) 

    • The Pre-Masters course Academic English for Higher Studies must be undertaken. Successful completion of this course meets the English Language entry requirement of the specified UNSW master’s degree.

    (b) If you have an IELTS greater than or equal to 6.5 (or equivalent)

    • One of the following electives must be undertaken: Economic Decision Analysis in Engineering OR Principles of Programming, with the elective dependent upon the student’s intended UNSW master’s degree.
