As an over 18 year-old student you do have more options to secure accommodation. Our first recommendation would be to insure you use regulated websites to secure the best accommodation for yourself. Study Stays

If you would like to rent privately with friends or just yourself here is an avenue for you to look at local available locations.

Study Stays lists share housing and private rental vacancies near the University. Accommodation listings can be submitted by landlords, real estate agents and students.

However, please note, that UNSW Global does not inspect the properties listed or conduct background checks on them to determine accuracy of the information provided. Students are advised to inspect the accommodation and make their own assessment of the information provided.

Live with an Australian family in their home for a different experience altogether. This is a great opportunity to practice your English in an immersive family environment.

Applications must be made directly to the Homestay agencies.

Private rental

Before you rent a private property, think about where you’d like to stay. Remember to do your research and keep all your receipts.

Whether you are renting by yourself or with a friend we have some top tips for you when searching for a place.


Top tips for renting

  • Use official real estate websites.
  • Avoid non-regulated sites such as WeChat, Facebook or Gumtree.
  • Sign a contract. A contract will include such things as; Dates of stay, Weekly rent fee, Cancellation Policy and mention any extra fees.
  • Ensure your Bond is lodged with the Department of Fair Trading. This will protect your deposit.
  • Keep accurate records:
    • Keep all payment receipts.
    • Obtain Landlords' real name and email address (e.g. not only WeChat name).
    • Obtain companies true address and contact number.
  • Never give anyone any money for a property you haven’t inspected (inside and out).
  • Being close to public transport is very helpful in Sydney.
  • Make sure you understand the tenancy agreement (contract) before you sign it.
